The long-awaited Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona is almost here: today at Montmelò the first activities involving the media will begin, while tomorrow the technical ‘show and tell’ will be very interesting given that many teams will bring to the Circuit de Catalunya several big updates, including Ferrari and without forgetting the Aston Martin.
“We are two tenths of a second behind, now it’s our turn to develop”, said Mattia Binotto two weeks ago at the end of the Miami Grand Prix won by Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who therefore scored his third victory out of five races in this first part of the 2022 Formula One season, meaning he won all the races in which he arrived at the checkered flag. The Ferrari team principal personally attended last Friday’s filming day in Monza where the Maranello team tested on track the solutions developed in the factory: in addition to the new floor, a new medium-high load rear wing is expected as well as some updates for the sidepods to improve aerodynamic efficiency.
The work carried out by Mattia Binotto and the Ferrari technicians was praised by Carlos Sainz senior, who is not afraid of Red Bull’s well-known ability to develop their projects throughout a Formula 1 season: “Ferrari is working well and I think that with Mattia Binotto can do things with tranquility and the right determination” – said the legend of Rally and Dakar when interviewed by Italian daily newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport – “I have faith in Ferrari, its technicians are great, capable, they know what to do to fight for the World championships; then in racing, it is often the details that determine the final success. The fact remains that what Ferrari has done so far is impressive”. – he explained.
After finishing the 2021 Formula 1 season in front of Charles Leclerc in the Drivers’ standings, Carlos Sainz junior in this early 2022 has made a few mistakes that have affected the ranking which sees him currently in fifth position, 51 points behind his teammate. According to Carlos Sainz senior, his son is two tenths behind from Charles Leclerc, a gap which can be attributed to the confidence that at the moment is not yet perfect with the F1-75 car: “At the end of 2021, Carlos had the car well in hand, with this year’s one he still lacks a bit of feeling that can be quantified in two tenths. But I am convinced that in a couple of races he will have the car in hand. I’m not worried”. – Carlos Sainz senior concluded.
