Carlos Sainz, the painful farewell to Ferrari
The move to Williams marks an important step but also represents a rather painful phase in Carlos Sainz’s career. Just when his contract with Ferrari seemed on the verge of being renewed, the Spaniard was overtaken by Lewis Hamilton and left empty-handed, spending the entire season as an outsider within the team. Despite this, and aside from a few moments of inevitable and understandable tension with teammate Charles Leclerc, Sainz Jr. helped Ferrari battle McLaren for the Constructors’ Championship title until the final Grand Prix. This attitude impressed Carlos Sr., who expressed his belief that his son deserved a seat in a top team rather than ending up at Williams.
Carlos Sainz Sr. speaks
In an interview on the sports program *El Larguero* aired on the Spanish radio station Cadena Ser, the rally legend and four-time Dakar winner revealed that his son had, in some ways, been a victim of injustice: “I believe Carlos deserves to drive for a top team; he has done enough to earn that recognition. Yet, next season, that won’t be the case… There are many good drivers, but the world of F1 is always complicated. We can’t know what the future holds, but in general, you mustn’t lose heart. You can’t give up; you have to keep going with enthusiasm.”
“It was certainly a very difficult year,” added Carlos Sr., who is soon heading to Saudi Arabia to compete in the 2025 Dakar edition, debuting behind the wheel of the Ford Raptor T1+. “Knowing from the start of the season that he would have to change teams. I think he gave it his all and had an excellent championship. With the challenges, with appendicitis, with many other issues, but also with victories. Ferrari was in the fight for the Constructors’ title, and even though it was tough, they battled until the very last race.” – he concluded.
