Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz has strongly denied claims about the 2022 Ferrari Formula 1 challenger after several reports stated that the SF-21 car ‘evolved’ more to his driving style during the previous championship.
The Spaniard had a difficult start to the 2022 Formula 1 campaign, struggling in the first few races as opposed to his Maranello teammate Charles Leclerc who was able to quickly adapt his driving style to new generation of ground-effect cars, taking the F1-75 car on top of the standings in the Bahrain Grand Prix and the Australian Grand Prix, two of the first three rounds of the season.
While Carlos Sainz finished in second place at the Bahrain International Circuit, he described the result as the worst of the year due to the huge gap to his teammate, but the Spanish driver gradually improved during the year, even taking his first Formula 1 victory in the British Grand Prix and ending the season with three pole positions.
Talking to the media after the official presentation of the SF-23 challenger, Carlos Sainz was clear in rejecting the idea that his form and results got better because the 2022 car would have shifted closer to his preferred style and away from Charles’.
“I feel like there was this trend last year where people were saying that the car was going in my direction.” – the Ferrari man pointed out, as reported by the Italian media.

Carlos then continued:
“This is what I am going to say, and say very openly: A Formula 1 car doesn’t develop towards one driver or the other. An F1 car develops to be quicker and develops on the weaknesses it has, and my job as a driver is to give indications of where the car is weak, it is contrasted with data, and I give that feedback. Honestly, the only thing I care about is that the car is faster, and I went through some difficult moments last year. We started with a car that required a certain, specific driving style and even in the worst moments, I adapted. I managed a bit too late for my liking, but I adapted to make it happen. The target this year is again to start better and adapt to whatever the car [is like].” – the Spanish driver concluded.
