Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz interview for Italian newspaper corriere.it (first part):
What Spanish food do you miss most in Italy?
Carlos Sainz: “None. Here in Italy you eat well. It’s not like in England, where I missed jamón, paella, things like that.”
If you could race with a Ferrari driver from the past who would you choose?
Carlos Sainz: “Michael Schumacher from 2004, at the peak of his career. I would like to be next to him just to know how he became a leader. And then Gilles Villeneuve. I knew him from my father’s stories and then from youtube [videos]. Lauda and Alonso too, but I know Fernando better.”
Do you talk to Ferrari president John Elkann?
Carlos Sainz: “Much more than I expected. He worries about everything. He calls us all the time and asks us a lot of things. He is very motivated. He is often in Maranello and you can feel his push.”
What is so special about Charles Leclerc?
Carlos Sainz: “His story. He lost a friend, Jules Bianchi, then his father. He became even stronger by overcoming tremendous tragedies. That’s why I admire him so much. I’ve followed his whole career. Some people think Charles and I are too young for Ferrari, but I’m 26 and in my seventh season in F1. I have the skills to help this team get back into winning positions. We already know the value of Charles. He has proved it. We are pushing hard in Maranello. We are always in the simulator, always with the engineers and mechanics. Two young drivers bring a lot of energy. We are full of energy and we want to win.”
