F1 | Replaced by his childhood idol: the story of Sainz and Hamilton
Carlos Sainz, after his first podium with Williams comes surprising words about Hamilton
Carlos Sainz’s departure from Ferrari was far from painless. The arrival of Lewis Hamilton at Maranello for the 2025 Formula 1 season forced the Spanish driver to vacate his seat in red, leading him to take on a fresh challenge with Williams. It is a new adventure with one of the sport’s most historic teams, which after a difficult start is finally beginning to deliver the first rewards for the driver from Madrid.
The 2025 season did not begin smoothly for Carlos Sainz: only a single point collected across the opening four races and plenty of difficulties in bringing the Grove-built car into the points. Then came some signs of recovery, with top-10 finishes in Miami, Imola and Monaco, before another series of disappointing weekends. However, in Baku came the turning point: a third place that returned Williams to the podium, a result that had been missing for a long time and one that gave the entire team a huge boost of confidence.
The response from Sainz that will also surprise Hamilton
When asked if he felt satisfaction at reaching the podium before Lewis Hamilton, who with Ferrari is still struggling to secure a top-3 result, Carlos Sainz replied with maturity: “Honestly, what others are doing does not concern me. I only think about the fact that at the very first opportunity we had to reach the podium with Williams, we managed to take it. And that is what matters.”
During an interview with the BBC, the Spaniard surprised many with words of deep respect for his former teammate: “If I were not a Formula 1 driver, Lewis Hamilton would be one of my role models. When he arrived in Formula 1, I was only ten years old, and in 2008 I watched him win his first world title. I followed him as he fought against Fernando Alonso, Felipe Massa and all the others. He was one of my heroes, a person I have always admired.”
The Baku podium, a key moment in Sainz’s new adventure
The Baku podium represents not only a turning point in the 2025 season but perhaps also a decisive moment in the career of Carlos Sainz. Williams, brought back into the spotlight thanks to the hard work of the entire team and the determination of the Spanish driver, now aims to establish itself as a consistent contender in the midfield battle. For Carlos Sainz, the objective is clear: to continue building solid results without making comparisons with Lewis Hamilton, while enjoying this exciting new adventure in blue.
