Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz feels that tyre degradation will represent a major aspect for the 2022 Formula 1 Dutch Grand Prix, which Carlos will start from third place on Sunday at Zandvoort circuit.
The Ferrari driver had a positive weekend so far, but could not match the pace of his Maranello teammate Charles Leclerc and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen in the final stages of the qualifying session at Zandvoort. The Spaniard finished less than one tenth of a second away from the Dutchman’s pole lap time and will start just ahead of the two Mercedes cars of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell.
In an interview after qualifying, Carlos Sainz did not know where his deficit to the top two came from: “It was a clean lap with no mistakes, just missing that last half-tenth [of a second] to beat Charles and Max. It was on the limit out there, every little metre of track that you could use where you could push was counted. It wasn’t an easy qualifying from Q1, to Q2, to Q3, but I think in the end, we did a decent job.” – Carlos Sainz said.
Now the focus shifts completely to Sunday’s race at the Zandvoort circuit and Carlos Sainz pointed out that the relentless nature of the Dutch track created tyre issue for the F1-75 car, an aspect that the Spaniard feels will lead to the possibility of choosing from ‘many strategy options’:

“It is very tough out there, especially with these heavier cars. The truck is especially demanding on the tyres. We have a lot of overheating during the lap, even in the long runs, and a lot of degradation. I think tomorrow is going to be an interesting day. There’s going to be a lot going on, even if it’s difficult to try to overtake. There are going to be many options with the strategies.” – Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz at the end of the qualifying session.
