For Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz, the 2023 Formula 1 Belgian Grand Prix was compromised early on when his Ferrari was involved in a collision with Oscar Piastri’s McLaren during the first lap at the 7.004-kilometre Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in Stavelot.
The Spanish driver suffered significant damage to the underbody and sidepods of his SF-23, resulting in approximately five percent loss of aerodynamic load. Despite this setback, car number 55 continued on the track for several laps, but the compromised pace of the SF-23 car led the Maranello team to call him into the pits to avoid putting too much stress on the gearbox and Power Unit.
After the race, Carlos Sainz analyzed Ferrari’s performance in the Belgian Grand Prix, trying to find some positive aspects. “Certainly, it’s disappointing how it went. We had a good pace today, and it was evident with Charles as well.” – the Spaniard pointed out.
“Not being able to actually compete due to the incident in turn 1 is naturally frustrating. We had fewer issues with the tires compared to previous weekends,” continued the former McLaren driver. “That’s why we need to remain optimistic. Today, for example, Charles managed to keep Lewis Hamilton in check, which is an aspect we struggled with in recent races.” – he continued.

Despite Carlos Sainz’s early retirement in Belgium, Scuderia Ferrari achieved a podium thanks to Charles Leclerc. The Monegasque driver, who started from pole position due to Max Verstappen’s penalty, had to settle for third place given the clear superiority of the Red Bull. Both Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez showed superior pace throughout the weekend, as widely expected.
