Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz highlighted the way in which the Maranello team focused on solving its tyre issue after the difficulties encountered at the Paul Ricard track earlier this year.
Carlos had a rather difficult start at the 2021 Formula 1 season alongside the Maranello team, but came back strong in the last races and finished the first half of the championship even above teammate Charles Leclerc. During the season the Ferrari team made a big impression on Carlos Sainz.
The Spanish driver explained how he saw Ferrari working pretty hard to improve the car after the French Grand Prix. During the race at Paul Ricard it was clear that the Maranello team was not able to get the front tyres to work properly, which meant that tyre management was pretty poor and led to both drivers finishing outside the points.
“There has been a lot of focus and attention on this issue because the problem at Paul Ricard was so dramatic,” Carlos Sainz explained to Motorsport-total.com. “The moment this happened, we all flew back to Maranello, had a few meetings, did some analysis and worked intensively in the simulator for two, almost three days to understand our car and find out what caused this big problem.”
Carlos Sainz played a supporting role at Ferrari
Despite the fact that Carlos Sainz was keen to help Scuderia Ferrari’s employees find the problem, he realised that his role was mainly in terms of giving feedback. “As drivers we can’t do much more. And the engineers take care of the rest. It’s been a lot of fun and I’ve enjoyed it a lot.” – he added.
