Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz asserted that the Maranello team has improved operationally compared to when Frederic Vasseur joined the Italian side, resulting in the Prancing Horse securing third place in the constructors’ championship this season. Despite this progress, Carlos Sainz acknowledged the team’s inconsistency during the 2023 Formula 1 campaign, describing it as a ‘mentally challenging’ aspect.
In the past season, Carlos Sainz achieved the sole non-Red Bull victory, triumphing at the Marina Bay street circuit in Singapore ahead of Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton in the Mercedes. Ferrari, known for their unpredictable performances, strategic errors, and reliability issues in past seasons, faced criticism from fans.
In an interview for Motorsport.com as the Formula 1 campaign concluded, Carlos Sainz reflected on scoring fewer points than in 2022 but experiencing just one retirement (in Belgium) compared to the remarkable six times in the previous year. When questioned about the Maranello team’s operational strength, he affirmed the positive evolution:
“It feels exactly that way also on the inside. I think we acknowledge the package we have and now we just put it on track and we try to maximise it every weekend. And I think we are doing a much better job of that. It’s not easy because it’s mentally challenging to understand how in Las Vegas you can out-qualify the Red Bull by three tenths and fight for the win and then go to Brazil and be a second off the race pace. It’s almost unbelievable that these swings in performance can happen. Now we need to focus on making sure we have more races like in Las Vegas than in Brazil next year.” – the Ferrari driver concluded.
