Carlos Sainz limits the damage
With his fifth-place finish in the Baku Sprint race at the Baku City Circuit, Carlos Sainz put in a solid performance. On one hand, it confirms that the Spanish driver still needs to find the right feeling with the SF23 car on the Azerbaijan track (which will be impossible considering the Parc Fermé regulations).
On the other hand, he showed to be a tough driver, capable of bringing home four points on a circuit where having complete confidence in the car is essential to avoid crashing given the track characteristics of the Baku City Circuit.
It may not be Charles Leclerc’s amazing level of performance shown this weekend, but Carlos Sainz himself admitted that he is not able to extract the potential that the Monegasque driver can, especially in qualifying. Moreover, the former McLaren driver believes – unlike his teammate – that the car has not improved much in race pace.
Carlos Sainz’s words
“For me, the important thing is to limit the damage after a very difficult, strange, and mentally intense weekend, because driving a car that doesn’t give you confidence on a track like this makes every lap difficult. But I’m making small progress and changing my driving style to get closer to what Charles is doing,” – Carlos Sainz said to Sky Sport F1.

“However, I can’t change anything on the car and the setup to improve it, so I’m a bit stuck in this position. In qualifying, the change in the setup is costing us, and Charles has shown that the car is very fast on the flying lap, but in today’s race, I didn’t see great improvements. Red Bull is clearly ahead, and Mercedes had little degradation. At the beginning, I was close to taking George’s DRS, but in the end, he got away, and this means there is still work to be done for the race.” – Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz pointed out at the end of the Sprint Race in Azerbaijan.
