In the first attempt of Q3, Carlos Sainz gave hope to the the Ferrari fans by taking the provisional pole position with a lap time of 1’41.814, but in the final flying lap the Maranello team’s Spanish driver was unable to improve and was overtaken by his Ferrari teammate as well as the two Red Bull drivers.
As a result, Carlos Sainz has to settle for fourth place on the starting grid for the 2022 Azerbaijan Grand Prix tomorrow. The result of course left a bitter taste for the Spaniard, who had to surrender to an impressive lap by Charles Leclerc (1’41.359) and will also start behind Sergio Perez (who preceded him by 0 ″ 173) and Max Verstappen (faster by 0 ″ 108):
“Here in Baku it happens: when you think you have found the limit you try to look for something more and today I went too far in looking for that limit, which I exceeded”, admitted Carlos Sainz when asked by Sky Italia, in reference to some mistakes made in the second run of Q3, adding: “Up to that point it had been a good qualifying session. I was fighting for pole, which I didn’t do on the last couple of races. Here I was a little more at ease. It’s a pity, because today we could have been 1-2 with a nice lap, but I’m happy with the car” – the Spanish driver explained, at the end of the qualifying session for the 2022 Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku.
The positive note is therefore the feeling with the car: “I’m understanding it better and I’m driving better. I just miss figuring out exactly what to do in Q3 when I have to put it all together. You can see that I wasn’t able this time, but I’ll try again next time”. – he concluded.
