Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz is of the opinion that Scuderia Ferrari’s performance will improve in this final part of the 2023 Formula 1 championship in comparison to McLaren, especially at high-speed circuits, after the Maranello team experienced a setback in the Japanese Grand Prix at the Suzuka circuit that required some analysis and adjustments.

McLaren has undergone a transformation since the Austrian Grand Prix, particularly in terms of the performance shown by the MCL60, and Lando Norris has emerged as the second-highest points earner in the last eight races, following Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.

While Scuderia Ferrari has been the sole team to beat Red Bull so far, with Carlos Sainz securing the race win at the Marina Bay street circuit, the Spaniard foresees an opportunity to be more competitive with McLaren on high-speed tracks, such as the upcoming events in the United States and Mexico City. This is a result of the dedicated work Ferrari undertook during the summer break to comprehend their package better, bringing them closer to McLaren and even Red Bull up to a certain point.

When Carlos Sainz was asked whether he believes Ferrari can contend with McLaren purely based on speed, he responded.

“At the high speed circuits? Yes. When we go to places like Mexico, even Austin, with more low speed content we will be very close to them and we will have a race with McLaren. [At Suzuka] I think Lando especially was a couple of times quicker per lap, Piastri whenever I had clean air I had some very strong laps comparable to him, I just would have preferred it cleaner.” – the Ferrari driver explained, ahead of the Qatar Grand Prix, which is scheduled to take place this weekend at the Lusail International Circuit.
