Carlos Sainz on losing position to Alonso: “I didn’t want to hit Charles” | 2023 Baku GP. Carlos on losing position to Alonso.

Carlos Sainz, a race in defense
Starting from fourth on the grid, Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz managed to hold his position at the start of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku, but he paid for the only mistake he made during the race. The Spanish Ferrari driver “bled in front of the shark”, namely Fernando Alonso whois always very good at seizing every opportunity that the events of the race put at the disposal of the drivers.

The Aston Martin driver surprised his compatriot with a maneuver in the restart of the Safety Car: Carlos Sainz, even in the second part of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, was never able to get close to Fernando Alonso, a sign that probably the overtaking was only a matter of time. Finally, the Ferrari driver finished fifth, the result of a not very exciting race, conducted defensively even against Lewis Hamilton in the final stages, although the seven-time champion was never able to attempt an overtaking move on the Smooth Operator.

Carlos Sainz’s words
The Ferrari driver commented on the two-time Formula One world champion’s maneuver against him: “In the overtaking move made by Fernando Alonso, I didn’t want to hit Charles: I wanted to make sure not to lose the load and I had to brake a little earlier. In any case, Fernando passed me well, he was good there. Yesterday I had a good defense, and today he was better, these is racing.” – said the Spaniard in his interview for Sky Sport F1. “We will have many fights this year, but I don’t think the end result would have changed if I had stayed ahead, because it was clear that he had more pace than me.” – the Ferrari man pointed out after the Baku race.

A very difficult weekend
Carlos Sainz never felt comfortable this weekend with the SF-23 single-seater. Between one too many touches on the walls and a spin that almost ruined his qualifying session on Friday, the Spaniard never had the necessary confidence to drive 100% on a circuit that is very complicated from this point of view, which does not allow any type of error and forces drivers to blindly trust the car they have in their hands.
