Have you had a chance to drive the 2022 car on the simulator?
Carlos Sainz: “I’ve been driving it since January, so you can imagine how many hours I’ve spent on it! I’ve driven it many times this year, the last session was last week. And after every Pirelli test (with the 18-inch tyres) we’ve done this season, we’ve tried to optimise the virtual model of the tyre, and then try it on the simulator.”
Lando Norris after driving the 2022 car in the simulator said that he did not have great impressions. How did it go in your case?
Carlos Sainz: “This is the million dollar question in the paddock today. I know how our car feels, and among drivers we ask ourselves: how is yours? I think there is starting to be a trend in the paddock, and especially among the drivers, according to which we are going in a bad direction, but I think we are still a long way from what we will feel when we are on the track behind the wheel of the real car. It will be a big change, and in the end it will be appreciated, but don’t ask me more because I can’t talk about it ”.
What makes you think that Ferrari will soon be at the top?
Carlos Sainz: “I believe that the best team is always made up of the best people, the best managers, the best technicians, and in general the best people in their area of expertise. I am certain that at Ferrari we have done an incredible job in recent years with the aim of building a winning team. As I said, I don’t know if 2022 will be the right year, but for sure it’s the first chance to try to win. I think a lot of work has been done, including on the culture of the team and its modernization, so I don’t mind knowing that we will all be on par in economic terms, in fact, I like it, because the competition will be even greater and it will make Formula 1 better. As a fan of this sport I think it is the right direction. I hope we will be able to do it, but it will be a hard-fought confrontation against very strong competition”.
