“I came to Ferrari to win the World Championship. In no team have I ever felt classified as a second driver, neither in Maranello nor before”. Carlos Sainz has never hidden the very understandable ambitions that every Formula 1 driver must have in order to perform at their best in the sport.
The Spanish driver made his F1 debut alongside Max Verstappen in the same team and after six years he was able to cross paths with the Dutchman again ‘on equal terms’ in a 2022 season in which Red Bull and Ferrari were the best cars on the track.
The season that has just ended has been highly formative for Carlos Sainz, who admitted that for the first time he was faced with having to deal with the stress and pressure that come with being behind the wheel of a car capable of fighting for pole position and to win races, a situation which led him to make a few mistakes too many in the start of the season:
“2022 was very important, for the first time I had a car capable of winning races and taking pole positions, it taught me how to compete up front and I, given that I learn quickly, know that next year I will be a better driver and I will be able to take advantage of it,” Carlos Sainz said as a guest of an event organized by his sponsor Estrella Galicia.
Next season, Scuderia Ferrari will have a new team principal and general manager, Frederic Vasseur, but the rest of the team is set to remain virtually unchanged.

Above all, the Ferrari 2023 will be the result of the work of the same minds that designed a ‘beastly’ F1-75 at the beginning of 2022. The Maranello technicians worked on the gaps that emerged during construction – power unit reliability and tire wear in the race – and the goal is to provide Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz with a single-seater with no weak points to finally aim for the world title in 2023.
The Spaniard wants to be in the fight right from the start and to do so, he knows he has to replicate the level of performance seen in 2021 and build on the strength of the experience he gained during this year: “I see the title close and at the same time far away, because I’m in one of the best teams in the world , but there is a high standard in this era of Formula 1. In 2023 I hope to have a consistent year, lots of points, few retirements and let’s see where it takes me.”
If you want to fight for a world championship, you have to be consistent in your performance. I know how to win races, I learned my lesson and I will try to do it more often next year. If I go back to being the constant Carlos of 2021, it is something that can be achieved“ – Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz concluded.
