The Las Vegas weekend has officially begun. During the Italian night, the Netflix Cup took place, an event that combined golf and Formula 1 with the participation of four professional PGA Tour golfers and drivers Carlos Sainz, Lando Norris, Pierre Gasly, and Alex Albon.
Carlos Sainz Wins the Netflix Cup but Destroys the Trophy
The tournament saw the participants split into four pairs, each composed of a golf player and a Formula 1 driver. The match took place over eight holes, and the two pairs with the best scores proceeded to the final hole.
Competing for the title were the teams formed by Lando Norris with Rickie Fowler and Carlos Sainz with Justin Thomas. The final victory went to the Spanish Ferrari driver, who, along with the former world number one golfer, managed to prevail over the McLaren driver.
However, the celebrations for the success did not go exactly as planned. While on the podium to celebrate the victory, the Netflix Cup trophy slipped from Carlos Sainz’s hands and shattered into a thousand pieces. The Ferrari driver immediately put his hands to his head in “desperation” amid the general laughter of the onlooking spectators. His teammate also took the incident in good humor, and the two then took a photo with all the parts of the now-destroyed trophy. The two winners also received the checkered flag jacket, another fusion of the F1 and golf worlds, where the winner of the Augusta Masters is awarded the historic Green Jacket.
This is not the first time this year that we’ve seen a Formula 1 driver destroy a trophy. Lando Norris had broken Max Verstappen’s trophy in Hungary and his own in Brazil. We will see if Netflix will create a new one to present to the winners or if Carlos Sainz and Justin Thomas will be forced to use a lot of glue.
Well that didn’t last long 😅 @Carlossainz55 #LasVegasGP 🇺🇸 #F1
