With a 2021 Belgian Grand Prix that will go down in history due to the continuous delay and suspension of the race, this year’s event at Spa-Francorchamps will certainly not be remembered for the spectacle experienced on the track, quite the contrary. With only two laps completed behind the Safety Car, the result of the race thus effectively rewarded the positions from Saturday’s qualifying session.
With the final points halved, there was no lack of disappointment from many of the protagonists who would have liked to battle in Spa-Francorchamps, starting with Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz. However, Carlos explained for Sky Sport that he agrees with the decisions taken by the Race Direction: “It’s a pity, but they were correct – explained number 55 – the conditions were too difficult, you couldn’t see anything. When you go to 300 km / h and you see nothing, you cannot drive in these circumstances, because you risk too much, even more so on a track where big accidents can happen”.
In any case, the Spanish driver did not agree with the system for assigning world championship points, halved as required by the regulation in these rare events: “I really don’t think they should be given for a race that has never been held – Carlos Sainz analyzed – for my half point I’m not happy, I don’t deserve it. The only aspect I could agree with was to try to go out to assess the track situation, but we saw that you couldn’t drive. But certainly – concluded the new Ferrari driver – not only to follow the regulations and be able to award some points, because they should not be assigned in this way.”
