Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz has set out an ambitious target of fighting for the Formula 1 title in the upcoming season, which starts in two weeks at the Bahrain International circuit.
Carlos Sainz encountered some difficulties in the first part of the previous championship, but was able to gradually get a better understanding of the F1-75 car and was in string form in the second half of the year, taking his first pole position and race win in the British Grand Prix at the Silverstone circuit, ending the 2022 F1 season in fifth place.
As he is getting ready to start his third year alongside the Maranello team, Carlos Sainz is feeling increasingly confident about what he can achieve, targeting to be involved in the duel for the 2023 Formula 1 championship, in the hope that the SF-23 car can match the race pace of Red Bull.
“When you drive for Ferrari, and when you are as competitive as obviously I am, the target going into the year has to be to fight for the World Championship and to try to win,” Carlos Sainz explained in a recent interview after the official presentation of Ferrari’s challenger for the next season – “This is in the mind not only [of] me, [but] the whole team.”
Carlos Sainz confirmed that he has focusing a lot on how to improve and make the final step forward, feeling confident he can target a Formula 1 title.

“Looking more short-term, it is clear that if you want to be World Champion, you need to be the best driver and you need to be the best team. What I focus on is on that short-term [view of] what can I do? What can the team do to become a better team and [become] the best team on the grid and the best driver on the grid? I had very clear things in mind when I went into the winter and thought about it, [I worked] on them, and then obviously [I will] try to execute them this year.” – he added.
As we are getting closer to the winter pre-season testing session at the Bahrain International Circuit and the first round of the new season, which also takes place in Sakhir, Carlos Sainz believes that he has more confidence than in the 2022 season:
“I feel like I’m going to give it my best shot. But, whatever happens this year, I feel obviously more confident after last year. I feel more capable, better prepared. I know how it is now to fight at the front, what I need to do, and I feel ready for it. But everyone says the same in February. Everyone is World Champion, everyone wants to win and everyone is ready. What matters is later on, once the season starts, how you can stay loyal and fair to your ambitions and to your short-term goals.” – the Ferrari man concluded.
