Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz admitted that Real Madrid’s recent performance in the UEFA Champions League, at a point when everything seemed lost, can give him the inspiration to turn his flailing Formula 1 campaign around.
Carlos Sainz started the 2022 Formula 1 championship with a solid two podium places, in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, despite finishing behind his Maranello team-mate Charles Leclerc each time, but things started to go wrong for the Spanish driver at the Albert Park circuit and then in the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at the Imola circuit.
Carlos Sainz fell outside the top ten after the start of the Australian Grand Prix and tried to recover a few places as fast as possible, but made a mistake which ended his race. Seven days later, in Italy, Carlos Sainz’s race once again ended after just a few corners, but this time for no fault of his: the Spaniard was hit from behind by the McLaren of Daniel Ricciardo and could not get out of the gravel.
Yesterday Real Madrid, who Carlos Sainz supports, battled back from the brink of elimination to overcome Manchester City and book its place in the UEFA Champions League final. The English side preserved its cushion up until the final minute of normal time, only for Rodrygo to then strike twice in the space of 90 seconds to send the tie to extra-time. Real Madrid then claimed a winning goal in extra time to secure passage to the final: Karim Benzema swept home the eventual winner, converting from the penalty spot five minutes into the extra period after being felled in the box by Ruben Dias.

“I think it is more about a clean weekend more than anything else,” Carlos Sainz explained, when asked about his approach to the Miami Grand Prix this weekend – “The last two races I’ve been quicker in pure pace than the first two but the results have been worse. I was quite unlucky in Imola too, things out of my control, but [there are still] 19 races and like Real showed in sport everything can change in a matter of minutes. I’m still positive about it and I just need a clean weekend to get my season going. I’ve had before difficult starts to the season, my last three seasons, so I have been here before and I know how to turn it around.” – the Spanish driver concluded.
Carlos Sainz trails his Maranello team-mate and title leader Charles Leclerc by 48 points, ahead of the 2022 Miami Grand Prix.
