Former Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz has chosen not to get involved in the growing controversy sparked by John Elkann’s comments about Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton. The Ferrari chairman, following the double retirement in São Paulo, had urged the drivers to “focus more on driving and speak less.” His statement triggered strong reactions across the paddock and social media.
During an interview with Sky Sports UK, Carlos Sainz responded with a touch of irony when asked whether, now that he drives for Williams, he felt freer to criticize Ferrari. «How do you say it… Ted, this is none of my business», he said, quoting the well-known phrase.

He then added the line that has been circulating widely online. «Do you know the frog drinking tea? That is literally me right now». The reference is to the iconic meme of Kermit the Frog sipping tea, often used to signal detachment and non-involvement in a heated discussion.
John Elkann’s remarks had been made in Rome during a public event. «We have drivers who need to concentrate on driving and talk less. There are still important races remaining. Second place in the Constructors’ Championship is not impossible». The message generated considerable debate, especially because it came right after one of the most difficult weekends of the season for the Maranello team.
From the American paddock, Lewis Hamilton preferred to keep the tone calm. «I am always willing to do less media», he joked. He then added a more serious comment: «I believe everyone in this team needs to take responsibility. Everyone has to play their part».
Charles Leclerc also opted for a softer approach. «He explained to me what the intention behind his words was, and it was a positive message», the Monegasque driver clarified. «I cannot comment on the way it was expressed. What matters to me is the intent, and it was positive. For this reason, everything is fine».
Ferrari arrives in the United States for the Las Vegas Grand Prix weekend in a delicate moment. The performance level is well below expectations, and the double retirement in Brazil has increased the frustration surrounding the Scuderia.
The drivers’ responses, however, show a clear intention to maintain stability and focus as the season enters its final stages. Meanwhile, Carlos Sainz watches the situation from afar. And, at least for now, he prefers to remain the “frog drinking tea”.
