Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz is confident that “good moments are about to come” as he attempts to recover from two disappointing race weekends, in Australian and Italy, both races which concluded prematurely for the Spanish driver, after just a few laps.
Carlos Sainz had a great first season for the Maranello team after his move from McLaren, helping Scuderia Ferrari secure third place in the 2021 Formula 1 Constructor Standings and even finishing ahead of his teammate Charles Leclerc last season. However, the start of the 2022 Formula 1 championship has not been ideal for Carlos, despite the podium finishes in the Bahrain Grand Prix and Saudi Arabia Grand Prix: in both cases, the Spaniard was not able to match the race pace of Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen.
To make matters worse, a mistake at the Albert Park circuit in Australia and an unfortunate incident in the Emilia Romagna Grands Prix at the Imola circuit with Daniel Ricciardo meant that Carlos Sainz suffered two costly DNFs and lost ground in the Drivers’ standings.
Asked to reflect on his start to the 2022 Formula 1 season, which leaves him 48 points behind teammate Charles Leclerc ahead of the Miami Grand Prix next weekend, the Spaniard drew comparisons to early spells of misfortune and incidents he faced during his two seasons with McLaren:
“You could do a comparison. Yes. It’s similar,” Carlos Sainz admitted – “I think both years in McLaren, I had a very tough start to the season, and then I had a very good – let’s say – three quarters after that, if you want to put a fraction to it. I think it’s part of life, it’s part of the sport. You’re always going to be in nicer periods, and you’re always going to be in periods where things don’t go your way.” – he continued.

The Ferrari driver has no doubt that, as soon as he can put a smooth weekend together, without any issues during the practice sessions, he will be able to challenge Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen for pole positions and race wins:

“I’m confident that it can turn around very quickly. These last two weekends, in Australia and in Imola, the speed has been there and I’ve been feeling fairly confident, or a step more confident in the car and quicker. I think as soon as the string of bad luck finishes, the bad run, whatever, the good moments are about to come. History has proven to me many times now that this is the case in this sport. I just need to stay patient, stay calm in my head and it will come.” – Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz concluded.
