Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz was the protagonist of an excellent race last Sunday on Austrian territory. The Spaniard started on hard tires after a Saturday in which neither he nor his teammate Charles Leclerc had managed to qualify for Q3 on medium tires: no top 10 in qualifying, but free choice for Sunday’s start at the Red Bull Ring.
Ferrari therefore decided to choose different strategies for Charles and Carlos, with the Monegasque who started on the yellow tires, while the Spaniard preferred to start with the Hards as ge attempted to make his pit stop as late as possible: the second strategy definitely paid off. Carlos Sainz also arrived in the final stages of the race with softer and newer tires and in the last laps of the Austrian Grand Prix he managed to take that much-desired position on Sergio Perez that Charles Leclerc had twice tried to gain in his battles with the Mexican driver.
“We nailed the strategy two weekends in a row,” Carlos Sainz said. “P6, P5, I’m starting to be a little more like the Carlos I want to be at Ferrari and we’re starting to do the races the way we want them to. It was [the best case scenario] to finish P5, ″ he said. “It was a good result especially after struggling a lot on the first lap with the hard tire. It was a bit of a bold choice to start with the hards, especially feeling the grip in the formation lap and on the first lap I thought “whoa, here I will really fight against the medium and soft. But somehow I managed to do it, I stayed patient and did a very long stint on the hard, I think it was 50 laps, and the attack at the end was a lot of fun. We managed to put together an excellent fifth place, so I’m very happy ” – the Spanish driver concluded.
