Scuderia Ferrari is heading for the Sprint Qualifying race at Monza in a difficult situation after the events which took place in the final free practice session at the 2021 Italian Grand Prix that was marked by a heavy crash for the Spanish driver. Carlos Sainz lost the rear of his Ferrari SF21 car on the kerbs at the Ascari corner and made heavy contact with the wall midway through FP2 at Monza.
Carlos was then taken to the on-site medical facility for checks and although cleared, he is required to return for further checks one hour later. The crash was his third in four races after the incidents in Hungary and the Dutch Grand Prix.
Scuderia Ferrari’s last session ahead of Sprint Qualifying went from bad to worse as Charles Leclerc had to end FP2 earlier as he returned to the garage with the clock approaching zero having reported an issue via the radio. The Maranello team later said this incident was a health issue.
“We are working flat out, aiming to get Carlos’ car ready for Sprint Qualifying,” said a Ferrari spokesperson.
Addressing Leclerc’s situation, they added: “We cut his session a few minutes short as he was feeling slightly unwell.”
