Carlos Sainz confirms ‘Ferrari have a wind tunnel car better than one on track”. Carlos says Ferrari know where they must improve.

Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz has hinted that the Maranello team already have a wind tunnel car which is “better than the one” that has impressed in this start of the 2022 Formula 1 season and allowed Charles Leclerc to score two wins in the first three events.

The Ferrari’s F1-75 car proved to be fast and reliable from the first pre-season testing session back in February, but not many anticipated that the Italian side would end up with two victories after three races. Charles Leclerc’s 2022 debut was marked by a thrilling win in Bahrain, followed by a solid second place finish at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit and most importantly by a dominant victory in Australia at the Albert Park circuit.

These spectacular results have allowed Charles Leclerc to collect a massive 71 points ahead of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix this weekend, just four points off the 75 claimed by Nico Rosberg after 2016’s first three F1 races. However, Scuderia Ferrari are working on an even better car in the wind tunnel, as confirmed by Carlos Sainz:

“We’re confident we can develop our car. We already have, obviously, pieces running in the wind tunnel, and a car in the wind tunnel that is better than the one that we have right now on track, like all the teams have.” – the Spanish driver said.

Except for some small technical issues which affected Carlos Sainz’s performance in Australia, the Maranello team’s near-perfect reliability has been one of the strongest weapons in their armoury so far. Next up is the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, with Ferrari looking forward to a memorable weekend in front of the tifosi, despite the fact that the team will not introduce any significant updates at the Imola circuit. Carlos Sainz admitted that top-end speed remains Ferrari’s weakness in their battle against Red Bull.

“We are focusing as a team to try and improve a bit the top speed, to try and be able to fight them a bit more face to face in the race, because they definitely looked very, very strong in Jeddah. For the rest, I think we have a very good balance in the car, we have a good feeling overall and we’ve been reliable, too. So we just need to keep our head down and keep seeing where we can improve this car.” – he continued.

Ferrari could leave Italy next weekend with a great ersult allow which would allow the Maranello team to further extended its solid lead at the front of the standings, but Carlos Sainz is aware that the F1 campaign is still very long and with a lot still to descover about the 2022 Formula 1 challengers, the Spaniard feels his team are far from favourites yet when in comes to the fight for the world titles:

“Red Bull and Mercedes are the favourites, because we haven’t been in a title fight in the last few years, and in the previous years to that, these teams have out-developed Ferrari. We are still super cautious. We know we have a great car, and we have put together on track a great car, but these two teams have been in a title fight for the last two or three years, and they know how much you need to improve, they know exactly what they need to do. We are maybe lacking that bit of experience. I think we have great people and we are prepared, but we don’t know. We are still cautious and are expecting a bit to see what happens.” – Carlos Sainz concluded.
