Carlos Sainz Boosts Ferrari

In the past five weekends, Scuderia Ferrari has at least “drawn” with Mercedes. At Spa Francorchamps, both teams earned 24 points, while between Zandvoort and Suzuka, the SF-23 consistently outperformed the W14. From a -56 point gap at the start of the Dutch Grand Prix, they have now reduced it to -20. The 36 points gained from their rivals give hope to the Maranello team and their drivers for a second-place finish.

Both Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz aim to overtake Lewis Hamilton and George Russell and confirm the 2022 Formula One standings, with Red Bull leading and Ferrari as the second-best team. The Spaniard even defines the second place among constructors as the main goal of the season.

Carlos Sainz’s comments

“I think Mercedes hasn’t developed further. Usually, in these races, the focus shifts to the car for the following year. That’s what we’ve done; we had one last improvement in Japan, not a significant one, but the 2024 car is decided, in the wind tunnel, trying to improve. It’s the only thing to focus on right now,” he said during a press conference. “Securing second place in the Constructors’ Championship is the main goal because we’ve managed to close the gap to Mercedes in the last few races. The big question mark is Las Vegas, and we struggled in Mexico; it will be tough in Qatar, and Austin will go a bit better.”

“On a personal level, I focus on getting positive results, making the most of the car, as I am doing, and being ready if there’s an opportunity for a podium or a win. However, with this car, we don’t know if it can happen or not. To finish third, Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso would have to have several zero-point races, and I don’t see two world champions making continuous mistakes with their experience.” – the Ferrari driver concluded, ahead of the Qatar Grand Prix.
