Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz is currently under investigation by the race stewards due to a pit lane incident involving Alpine’s Fernando Alonso which took place earlier today in FP3 for the 2022 Bahrain Grand Prix in Sakhir. The Maranello team’s driver is being investigated for an unsafe release that appeared to block his compatriot, as Fernando Alonso made his way down the pit lane behind the wheel of his Alpine car.
Carlos Sainz and Scuderia Ferrari will be hoping that the Spanish driver will not receive a grid penalty for tomorrow’s race, as 27-year-old is confident he can fight for a place on the front row or even for pole position.
An unsafe release during a Grand Prix would almost certainly see Carlos Sainz handed a time penalty, as per changes to the Sporting Regulations that were made three years ago, but such incidents that take place during practice sessions and qualifying are dealt with separately, as the stewards gather to evaluate the situation.
Carlos Sainz ended final practice in fifth position, half a second off the pace set by Red Bull Racing Dutch driver Max Verstappen.
