Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz admits he was “disappointed” when he saw the latest edition of Netflix’s Formula 1 series Drive to Survive.
The documentary series has been in the headlines in recent weeks: it has had a positive impact on the one hand, by raising the image of Formula 1 particularly in the United States, but on the other hand it has been criticised by several drivers including Carlos Sainz and Max Verstappen, with the Red Bull driver stating the documentary series it is too “fake”.
“I have certainly felt quite a bit of change in the sport’s following from social media with American fans” – Scuderia Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz said, in a recent interview for GQ magazine – “I think obviously Netflix had the biggest impact on that. As a sport, we’ve always been relatively closed doors, and Netflix has allowed fans in America and all over the world to see the personalities of the drivers.” – he added.

Yet that does not mean that Carlos Sainz doesn’t agree with some of the views of his former teammate Max Verstappen regarding the Netflix storylines, which many times are exaggerated.
“The season three episode about Ferrari is not so great,” the 27-year-old admitted, when asked about episode 4 entitled ‘We need to talk about Ferrari’.
The episode chronicles the very disappointing season of Scuderia Ferrari in 2020 and the ’s abysmal 2020 season, and the deteriorating relationship between Sebastian Vettel and the Italian side, with Carlos Sainz replacing the German driver at the start of the current Formula 1 championship:
“I was relatively disappointed when I watched it because Ferrari is a lot cooler, a lot bigger, a lot better than how it appears. We were just going through a rough patch, and I think all great teams in every single sport go through difficult years. And now we are on our way back up.” – Carlos Sainz concluded.
