The 2022 Spanish Grand Prix was a race to forget for Carlos Sainz: first an imperfect start caused him to lose two positions to George Russell and Sergio Perez on lap 1, then an error on lap 7 in Turn 4, a spin due to a gust of wind, sent him outside the top ten, as the Ferrari driver was able to recover until fourth place in Barcelona. The result is far from ideal given the expectations ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix weekend and taking into consideration the one-two secured by Red Bull, but at least it allows the Spaniard to salvage some points after Charles Leclerc was forced to retire due to an engine issue.
Carlos Sainz’s considerations after the Spanish Grand Prix
Carlos doesn’t look for excuses: “A difficult start, the starting procedure was wrong. I was trying to recover when a gust of wind made me lose control in Turn-4. I went into a spin and then into gravel. This led to some floor damage and the car was never the same again. I couldn’t push through the fast corners. Fourth place wasn’t what we wanted, but at least I managed to get some good points.”
Unlike Charles Leclerc (you can read his statements here), Carlos Sainz was unable to find positive aspects on this day, as confirmed in front of the microphones of ‘Sky Sport F1’: “For me it’s difficult to find something positive, it’s not like for Charles. I’m having a hard time driving this car, you can see it clearly even from the outside. The updates are working well, the car is fast, but I’m not comfortable with this balance. It’s not what I want for the driving style I have. That’s why I can’t show a level of performance similar to the one from last year” – the Ferrari driver admitted, according to Sky Sport F1.
“I’m working on it together with the team and my engineers”, he said before concluding on Charles Leclerc’s race at the Circuit de Catalunya – “Too bad for Charles. He could have won and extended his lead in the championship, but sometimes it goes like this. For Red Bull it happened in the first few races and today it happened to us. It will go like this for the rest of the year.” – Scuderia Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz said.
