Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz is only’ 26 years old, but he has been working hard in Formula 1 in recent years on an impressive track record. The Spaniard has already competed for Toro Rosso, Renault and McLaren and from 2021 he will be in Ferrari’s red for at least two years. Sainz is looking forward to his time in Maranello.
Carlos Sainz has already taken on strong teammates such as Max Verstappen, Nico Hulkenberg and Lando Norris. Is that going to help him? “I hope so, but I am also realistic. I realise I am up against one of the fastest drivers in Formula 1. Charles has been at Ferrari for almost two years. I will need time to find the right set-up, to get to know the engineers and to feel at my very best”.
At De Telegraaf, Carlos Sainz states that he does not expect everything to go as smoothly as it could. After all, a changeover to Ferrari takes some time. “That makes the challenge even greater. But I am sure that when I am settled, I will be able to perform at a high level”.
In 2015 Carlos Sainz drove alongside Verstappen for Toro Rosso, the team led by Franz Tost. The two men had quite a rivalry, at least at first sight that seemed to be the case. “In any case, I have very good memories of that year. Many people think that we did not get along well, but the opposite is true. We had a good relationship, but we were also in a competition and were two rookies fighting hard for our own chances,” he explains.
It is possible that the Madrileen will fight with Verstappen again in 2021. However, things will be a lot different than they were six years ago. “Max and I were both new to the team, in sport and therefore had no experience. Things will be different with Charles next year, who already knows the car very well. I think Max and I are completely different drivers than we were back then. You can see that in our actions on the track” – the new Scuderia Ferrari driver concluded.
