In his usual analysis for Autosprint, Italian journalist and Sky Sports commentator Carlo Vanzini gave an overview of the 2023 Formula 1 championship, focusing on Red Bull’s dominance and the challenging phase that Ferrari and Mercedes are going through. According to the journalist, it’s time for the Maranello team to take concrete action, similar to what the Brackley team did by recalling James Allison to lead the team. Below is an excerpt of his comments.
Carlo Vanzini’s analysis:
“Unchallenged dominance. The RB19 is really in a different category, with efficiency secrets that are almost impossible for others to ‘copy’, except in part by Aston Martin. Probably one of the best cars in the history of Formula One,” says Carlo Vanzini, praising the work done by Red Bull.
He then adds: “Of course, Mercedes has built an empire, but it was done with the huge advantage given by the engine with the start of the Power Unit era in 2014. Today’s RB19 is the result of that Mercedes superiority and continuous work to improve themselves for the following season, rather than holding their breath and trying to get results in seasons that are evidently lost. Adrian Newey, the technical director and labeling him as a genius is restrictive, has further surpassed himself, putting others in a very difficult situation and at risk of confusion, if they are not already there.”
Regarding Ferrari, Vanzini Carlo analyzes: “Too much difference between qualifying performance and race performance. Sometimes you’re really left amazed because the same protagonists don’t have an explanation, like the two Ferrari drivers after Miami. Now we’re going to Imola, our home track where Red Bull’s great 2022 comeback began, with the first weekend dominated by the Austrian side, thanks also to the Sprint of last season. Red Bull has no weak points and the war between the two is within the bounds of loyalty, there are no unknowns, but there are for the others. For Ferrari, the home weekend risks being a torment, but also a possible beginning of rebirth with, as rumored, a new suspension, waiting for the Red Bull-style sidepods in Barcelona. Then a line will be drawn to not compromise even 2024.” – the Italian journalist continued.

From now on, every weekend needs to be treated as a testing session, to be used to close the gap with the Austrian team. “We’re waiting for Mercedes. It’s been since Bahrain that Toto Wolff says they’ll bring an A2 version to Imola, let’s not say B and then it will be interesting. Imola has nothing else to do but wait and demonstrate its undisputed affection for Italy racing to give strong support to the morale which is now very low for Charles and Carlos, but also for mechanics and engineers who certainly don’t go to the factory to do their job poorly, not forgetting that the first fans of the team are precisely them,” writes Carlo Vanzini for Autosprint.
Finally, the journalist concludes his comment by giving some ‘advice’ to Ferrari: “Taking Newey is not possible for anyone, he renewed for life, removing some elements from Red Bull is feasible and they are trying, especially among those Italians who have a workplace in Milton Keynes today. The present and future are dark and realizing as quickly as possible that it’s necessary to rebuild from the ashes and put solid foundations back is the first necessary step. It’s no coincidence that Toto Wolff has recalled James Allison to lead the team. Action is needed, not just words.” – he pointed out.
