The one-two finish of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz in the United States Grand Prix at the Austin circuit has reignited the enthusiasm of Ferrari fans. At the start of the 2024 Formula 1 season, few expected to see Ferrari in this position, still fighting for the Constructors’ title with five races remaining. The Maranello team’s 2023 F1 campaign, the first under Frederic Vasseur’s management, was far from successful, with Carlos Sainz’s win being the only highlight in an otherwise lackluster year.
However, Ferrari’s 2024 season has told a different story. The SF-24 single-seater immediately proved to be a strong car, managing to secure four victories in the first nineteen races of the championship, fueling the hopes of fans who still believe in the possibility of seeing at least one world title return to Maranello by the end of 2024.
Ferrari as World Champion, here’s what it takes
Let’s be realistic: while the chase for the Constructors’ title is difficult, the Drivers’ Championship now seems like a true mission impossible. Charles Leclerc is seventy-nine points behind Max Verstappen with five races (and two Sprint Races) left in the season. This means the Monegasque driver would need to gain around sixteen points per weekend on the Dutchman, not even considering the presence of Lando Norris.
As for the Constructors’ title, the situation is slightly better. Looking at the F1 standings, Ferrari is forty-eight points behind McLaren in the Constructors’ Championship with five weekends remaining in the season.
This means Ferrari would need to gain about ten points each Sunday to stay ahead of the team led by Andrea Stella. Of course, in this case, we also need to consider the presence of Red Bull and Mercedes, who could either help or hinder Ferrari’s chances.
One thing is certain: the end of the 2024 Formula 1 championship will be anything but dull, promising plenty of excitement for fans.
