THE DIFFICULT PERIOD THAT FERRARI IS GOING THROUGH IS PLAIN TO SEE. WILL THE TEAM BE ABLE TO TRANSFORM AHEAD OF 2024? FANS HOPE SO, BUT SOME AREN’T SO SURE…
Frederic Vasseur isn’t entirely certain that Ferrari’s problems can be resolved for the 2024 season. The team’s goal is to reverse the negative trend of this year. After an impressive start in 2022, Ferrari’s promising beginning fizzled out. However, it was hoped that lessons learned from the F1-75 would make the SF-23 a car capable of allowing Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz to contend for the title. Unfortunately, that hasn’t been the case.
The car is demonstrating a lack of race pace and aerodynamic issues, with the best performances coming on low-downforce circuits. Fred Vasseur is reluctant to simply change the “concept” of the car, believing that the team must work to address individual problems. However, he has also admitted that with maximum effort, there is a possibility of seeing a revolutionary car in 2024.
COMMENTS FROM CARDILE AND VASSEUR
Enrico Cardile, Ferrari’s Chassis and Aerodynamics Director, also commented on the matter, stating, “This has been a crucial year for us, especially to understand where we went wrong in the SF-23’s development process. We’ve continued to improve the car in the wind tunnel over the summer and will bring some updates in the upcoming races. Right now, though, all our efforts at Ferrari are focused on building the car for 2024, hoping the problems have been resolved.”
The Technical Director concluded, “Our main weakness lies in the car’s aerodynamics, so ever since it became clear we weren’t at the level we expected, all our attention has been directed towards improving those characteristics.”
Frederic Vasseur, on the other hand, commented on the progress that should be made by the Maranello team by saying, “When you want to improve, you have to take two steps. The first is understanding the weaknesses, and the second is correcting them. I think today we probably have a clearer picture of the problems, and we’re working on them, trying to improve before the end of the season. Unfortunately, the calendar doesn’t make things easy, potentially leaving us with some lingering issues next year.”
