Lewis Hamilton’s resurgence at Ferrari has become one of the biggest stories of the 2026 Formula 1 season. After a challenging first year in Maranello, the seven-time world champion now looks far more comfortable, competitive and influential within the Scuderia, and according to former Formula 1 team principal Otmar Szafnauer, there is a simple reason behind the change.
The British driver has emerged as Ferrari’s leading championship contender this season, collecting multiple podium finishes and helping the team establish itself as Mercedes’ closest rival. More importantly, there is a growing feeling that Lewis Hamilton is no longer adapting to Ferrari — he has become fully integrated into the project.
That shift may appear obvious from the outside, but Szafnauer believes it is the natural consequence of a process that always takes time when a driver leaves a long-established environment and joins one of Formula 1’s most unique organizations.
Why Lewis Hamilton needed time to settle at Ferrari
Moving to Ferrari is unlike joining any other team in Formula 1.
The Scuderia operates with its own culture, traditions and expectations. Drivers are not simply joining a racing team; they are becoming part of an institution that carries decades of history and enormous national pride.
After spending more than a decade at Mercedes, Lewis Hamilton arrived at Ferrari having grown accustomed to a completely different way of working. While the objective remained the same — winning races and championships — the people, internal processes, communication structures and day-to-day environment were entirely different.
Otmar Szafnauer suggested that such a transition inevitably requires an adjustment period. In his view, Lewis Hamilton needed time to build relationships throughout the organization, understand how Ferrari operates and develop the level of trust required for a successful long-term partnership.
According to the former Alpine boss, that process now appears to be reaching maturity, with both sides increasingly benefiting from a stronger connection.
A stronger bond is delivering results on and off the track
The improvement is visible in several areas.
Ferrari has shown increasing confidence in Lewis Hamilton’s feedback, involving him more deeply in the development direction of the SF-26. The British driver has repeatedly praised the team’s willingness to listen to his ideas and implement changes based on his experience.
One of the clearest examples can be seen in the evolution of the current car. Lewis Hamilton recently revealed that several aspects of the SF-26 reflect requests he made after joining the project, something that was not possible during his first season with the team. That collaboration has helped create a more productive working relationship between driver and engineers. It has also given Lewis Hamilton greater confidence behind the wheel, allowing him to extract more consistent performance from the car.
The results speak for themselves. Ferrari has become a regular podium contender, while Lewis Hamilton has re-established himself as one of the leading figures in the championship fight.
Charles Leclerc has also benefited from the team’s overall progress, creating a stronger driver pairing and helping Ferrari accelerate its development programme.
Fred Vasseur’s role in the Lewis Hamilton revival
Another important factor behind the transformation has been the relationship between Lewis Hamilton and team principal Fred Vasseur.
The two have known each other for many years, dating back to Lewis Hamilton’s junior career, and that familiarity has helped create an atmosphere of trust inside the team. Throughout the season, the Briton has repeatedly acknowledged the support he has received from Fred Vasseur and Ferrari management. He has credited the leadership group with helping him implement changes, express his ideas more freely and contribute to the team’s long-term vision.
That support has allowed the seven-time world champion to focus on performance rather than adaptation, a significant difference compared to the challenges he faced during his first season in red.
Signs of a driver enjoying Formula 1 again
Beyond lap times and championship standings, perhaps the most noticeable change has been Lewis Hamilton’s demeanor.
Observers throughout the paddock have pointed to a more relaxed, confident and energized version of the Ferrari driver. His body language during race weekends, interactions with engineers and public appearances all suggest a driver who feels increasingly at home within his new environment.
That renewed confidence has coincided with Ferrari’s upward trajectory and has reignited hopes that Lewis Hamilton could become a genuine championship contender once again after several years spent outside a sustained title battle.
For Ferrari, the timing could not be better. The team is pushing aggressively to close the gap to Mercedes through upgrades and continued development, while Lewis Hamilton appears to be reaching the stage where he can fully leverage his experience and leadership qualities.
If the current trend continues, the partnership that once generated uncertainty across the Formula 1 paddock may ultimately become one of the most successful driver-team combinations of the modern era. And with Charles Leclerc alongside him and Ferrari continuing to improve, the Scuderia finally looks to have the stable foundation it has been searching for in its pursuit of championship glory.
