Charles Leclerc tastes pole for a few seconds: his words of disappointment
Until the final moments of Q3, the battle for pole position at the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix appeared to be a straight fight between Mercedes and Max Verstappen. Then, in a dramatic twist, Ferrari suddenly came alive, with Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton surging to the top of the timesheets and briefly locking out the front row.
Charles Leclerc produced a superb lap of 1:06.349 to move into provisional pole position, finishing just 0.050 seconds ahead of teammate Lewis Hamilton. Max Verstappen’s dramatic crash at the final corner appeared to have settled the outcome, as the resulting yellow flags forced several drivers to back off.
However, George Russell was still completing his flying lap and managed to improve his time while remaining within the FIA’s yellow flag regulations. The Mercedes driver ultimately snatched pole position away from Ferrari in the final seconds of the session, denying the Scuderia what had looked like an unlikely but well-earned front-row lockout.
Charles Leclerc looks at the positives despite the disappointment
Charles Leclerc was visibly frustrated after seeing pole position slip away once again, but when speaking to the media he chose to focus on the encouraging progress Ferrari had made over the course of the weekend.
“I’m relatively happy with second place. The last few weekends haven’t gone well, and I wanted a clean qualifying session. Second is still a great place to start, and the team is working incredibly hard to bring more performance to the car. I wasn’t expecting to fight for pole until this qualifying session began, so it’s a pleasant surprise.”
Although missing out on pole was undoubtedly a bitter disappointment, Ferrari’s pace at the Red Bull Ring provides renewed optimism. With Charles Leclerc starting alongside George Russell on the front row and Lewis Hamilton lining up in third, the Scuderia will head into Sunday’s Austrian Grand Prix with a genuine opportunity to fight for victory.
