A tow truck collided with a billboard at the Red Bull Ring, causing a delay to the Porsche Supercup race but not affecting the Formula 1 Grand Prix, which will start on time as scheduled.
Tense moments unfolded this morning at the Red Bull Ring when a tow truck transporting a Formula 2 car to the pit lane struck a suspended billboard above the track along the circuit’s second straight. The impact caused the billboard to collapse, surprising the spectators.
Officials promptly deployed support vehicles to clear debris and restore track safety. The incident delayed the Porsche Supercup race originally scheduled for 11:45 local time. At 12:19 Italian time, the official announcement confirmed: “Track clear in sector 4.” Fortunately, the Formula 1 Grand Prix will not be delayed.
This incident adds to another unexpected event that occurred yesterday during Formula 1 Q1, when Scuderia Ferrari British driver Lewis Hamilton went off track at the final corner, causing a fire on the grass. Marshals quickly extinguished the flames, resulting in a red flag stoppage. To prevent further issues, the grass in critical areas will be watered today.
Despite these setbacks, Sunday’s schedule continues as planned. The Formula 1 Grand Prix will start at 15:00 local time, with Lando Norris on pole position. The British McLaren driver outqualified Charles Leclerc by half a second. Oscar Piastri and Lewis Hamilton will start from the second row in third and fourth places respectively.
