McLaren looks very strong after Friday’s sessions in Abu Dhabi, but Andrea Stella doesn’t want to celebrate just yet and is closely watching Ferrari and Charles Leclerc. Despite the penalty handed to the Monegasque, the McLaren team principal doesn’t want to rest on his laurels.
After the first practice sessions that closed Friday’s activities in Abu Dhabi, Stella clarified McLaren’s position in front of the media. In that case, the Italian team principal explained that it would be a mistake to underestimate the Maranello team and the Monegasque driver himself.
“Is there less pressure on us after Leclerc’s penalty? No, absolutely not. It doesn’t change anything for us because positions can easily be recovered. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Leclerc still fighting for the top spots on the grid,” says a realistic Stella.
“Let’s not forget that we are talking about Charles Leclerc and Ferrari, an extremely strong combination that could bring big surprises. As far as we’re concerned, we’ll remain fully focused so we can push as hard as possible and get the best result.”
For Andrea Stella, this is also a special challenge. His past at Ferrari is a key part of his personal challenge. “The motivation, the passion we have at McLaren is definitely comparable to what I was used to when I was at Ferrari. Striving for excellence is something we have in common.” – the Italian pointed out.
“Let’s not forget that McLaren, like Ferrari, is a historic and prestigious team. It would be fantastic to bring home a world championship that has been missing since 1998, 26 years ago. This team deserves to win for the great exponential growth that makes me proud,” concludes the team principal from Orvieto.
