Bernie Ecclestone Never Stops
Despite his 94 years, last Saturday Bernie Ecclestone traveled to London to attend the 80th birthday party of singer Eric Clapton. On that occasion, as reported by Blick, he met an old friend, Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, with whom he spoke about the latest developments in Formula 1 and – inevitably – Ferrari.
Bernie Ecclestone’s Revelations
Since leaving Ferrari, Luca di Montezemolo has rarely spoken about the Maranello team’s performance in Formula 1, despite their winless streak dating back to 2007 for the drivers’ championship and 2008 for the constructors’ title. It is therefore interesting to learn the thoughts of the Bologna-born manager, albeit filtered through Bernie Ecclestone’s account.
“I met former Ferrari boss Luca Cordero di Montezemolo in London,” the former Formula 1 chief told Blick, adding: “He was shocked by Ferrari’s double disqualification in China. Italy had never experienced such a disgrace since the beginning of the Formula 1 World Championship.” And these words come from someone who was already 20 years old in 1950, the year the championship debuted.
Bernie Ecclestone then concluded with a comment on Charles Leclerc’s disqualification: “For decades, after crossing the finish line, drivers have tried to collect as many stones as possible with their tires by driving through the gravel.”
