Scuderia Ferrari should make life more difficult for Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, as the Dutch driver is having an “easy time” on his way to a new Formula 1 world title, former F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone recently said.
The 91-year-old British business magnate, who was in charge of Formula 1 for many years until the takeover by Liberty Media in 2016, has stated several times that a string and competitive Ferrari F1 team is very important for the sport’s success.
And despite the fact that the Italian side is definitely a lot more competitive this year as compared to the previous seasons, Bernie Ecclestone believes he once again sees signs that the Maranello team is reverting to old bad habits: “Errors are creeping in again,” he said in a recent interview for the Swiss newspaper Blick – “The reliability we are seeing is often reminiscent of the old days and the drivers themselves are not always confident on the track. It means Max is having an easy time in the Red Bull with six wins already.” – the former chief executive of Formula One Group added.
Bernie Ecclestone admitted that he finds no joy in what he sees as Ferrari’s current difficult situation, as the Italian side continues it’s process of returning to the top of Formula 1: “Like many people, I had hoped that Ferrari would succeed again after more than 14 years,” he said, referring to the team’s last championship back in 2008. Unfortunately, I have to say that anyone who continues to put their money on Ferrari or Charles Leclerc will get nothing.”
Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc, however, is still confident the Maranello team can turn things around this season and recover the 49-point deficit to current championship leader Max Verstappen in the second part of the season: “The championship is still young. Yes, the disadvantage is 49 but that’s two wins – that’s all! Seriously, we just have to keep focusing on ourselves. So I’m not worried, I’m extremely motivated to finally have a clean weekend and show that we’re still there and that we’re still strong.” – he added.

Even Red Bull’s Dr Helmut Marko admitted that the Maranello team has been better at producing as light a car as possible based on the new rules and regulation for the 2022 F1 campaign: “I don’t know what it was at the last race but in one of the most recent ones Ferrari was only half a kilo above the minimum weight,” he is quoted by Autosprint – “That is far better than us and also in comparison with Mercedes.” – he stated after the Canadian Grand Prix last weekend.
