There has certainly been bad blood between Bernie Ecclestone and Lewis Hamilton: The former Formula 1 boss has repeatedly criticized the seven-time Formula 1 world champion, with the latter always supporting values that the 91-year-old has never defended or mentioned despite being in a position to be heard by millions of people. Bernie Ecclestone, for understandable reasons, is more attached to past drivers, including Michael Schumacher. And he didn’t want Hamilton to beat Michael’s record of championship titles.
“Max won in an honest and fair manner, which is good. People are probably happy now to see a new face at the top of Formula 1. Personally I’m happy that Lewis didn’t win the eighth World Championship, because he holds this record with Michael Schumacher. I would not like to see this record broken” – he told Sky News – “It is absurd to think that Hamilton has been robbed, as I read around. On the first lap he went off the track, crossed the chicane and came back in front of Verstappen without being punished, so he shouldn’t complain too much. These things always happen in sports. We shouldn’t blame the race control, he did exactly what was right” – the former Formula 1 boss explained.

“I heard Lewis on the radio team say they were manipulating the championship. I’d like to know who is smart enough to manipulate a championship in this way. A series of incredible circumstances happened and I’m sure everyone was more than happy to watch the race” – continued Bernie Ecclestone, who then deemed an appeal from Mercedes as unlikely. “It would be the worst thing they can do. They would pass as those who do not know how to lose.” – the former chief executive of the Formula One Group concluded.
