The first part of the 2023 Formula 1 season is now over following the Spa-Francorchamps event. The “Sprint” weekend in Belgium sees Formula 1 heading into the break with one certainty: Max Verstappen is increasingly establishing himself as the leader of the championship. Let’s take a look at the drivers’ and constructors’ standings after the race in the Ardennes.
A dominant force in both the Sprint Race and the Grand Prix, Max Verstappen cares little about starting from pole or further back. His partnership with Red Bull is a blissful love affair that elevates him closer to the third crown.
The 25-year-old from Hasselt has accumulated 314 points after 12 events. The Dutchman heads into the break with enviable serenity, as the gap to his rivals is monumental. Sergio Perez is the first among those in pursuit, if they can even be called that. His performance at the beginning of the season has returned, securing second place on the grid and finishing second in the race, but he trails Max Verstappen by 125 points.
Nevertheless, the Mexican driver has solidified his second place in the championship, with a 40-point advantage over the third step of the podium, currently occupied by Fernando Alonso. The Spaniard is enjoying the results achieved in the early stages of the championship, but each weekend sees his advantage over Lewis Hamilton diminishing. The British driver is now right behind Fernando Alonso, with only one point separating them ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix, the first round after the summer break.
A little over fifty points behind, we see the appearance of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc for the first time in 2023. The Sunday podium in Belgium allows the #16 to surpass two other drivers in the standings: Carlos Sainz and George Russell, with whom he is now tied on points, but ahead in terms of podiums achieved.

Looking at the team standings, it is undoubtedly the impressive performance of Red Bull that stands out. The Anglo-Austrian team has left all its rivals far behind, securing 503 points: the first pursuer is a distant 247 points behind, and that’s Mercedes.
Also worth noting is Ferrari’s rise in comparison to Aston Martin. The Maranello team is now just five points away from the British outfit, which has been struggling in recent races. Will the red team try to secure a spot on the constructors’ podium at Zandvoort?
