Barcelona secures its presence in F1: inauguration of new photovoltaic system at circuit

A few days ago, in Barcelona, the new photovoltaic system installed on the roof of the main grandstand of the circuit was inaugurated. With this installation, the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya will have the largest public self-consumption photovoltaic system in Catalonia. The project was presented during the opening of the second edition of the e-Mobility Experience, which will be held at the facility this weekend.

As reported on the circuit’s website, the space features a total of 1,239 solar panels covering 2,710 square meters and generating an annual energy volume of 0.88 GWh. The installed kWp capacity is 615 (combined data for the Main Grandstand, the canopy, and the roofs). In total, the system will produce 33% of the energy consumed by the facility each year.

Such initiatives are undoubtedly well-received by the FIA and Liberty Media, who are increasingly committed to sustainable and zero-impact Formula 1. They further secure the position of the circuit within the Formula 1 calendar (already confirmed until 2026).

Towards the Future and Renewable Energy

The Catalan Minister for Climate Action, Mascort, stated, “Cleaner, cheaper, and locally sourced energy is now a reality, whether it’s on rooftops with photovoltaic panels, on the roads with electric mobility, or with the help of Catalonia’s public Energy. This government has succeeded in removing Catalonia from the blockage of renewable energies: 1600 MW approved in two years with over 90 renewable projects with environmental approval, 91,000 photovoltaic consumption installations in Catalonia, representing more than 700 MW of power. Our goal is to achieve a fully decarbonized electrical system, as indicated by the Energètica de Catalunya Prospect.”
