80 horsepower less in Canada
Two weeks ago at the 4.361-kilometre Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal, Canada, Scuderia Ferrari Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc had to deal with a power unit control issue that cost the Monegasque driver 80 horsepower, which translated to a loss of 1.2 seconds per lap.
During the pit stop where Ferrari decided to take a gamble by fitting Charles Leclerc with dry tires despite the rain, a reset/power recycle of the power unit was performed, which resolved the issue that had made it impossible for Charles Leclerc to attack and defend on the straights of the Montreal track.
This afternoon at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona, Ferrari is conducting further checks to ensure the power unit is fully recovered. Formulapassion.it correspondent Simone Peluso noted that Charles Leclerc’s side of the garage was the first to start work, an hour ahead of everyone else. The power unit was turned on and off multiple times and pushed to the limiter. The Monegasque was present in the garage. It seems that, as we reported last week, the ‘reset’ engine from the pit stop in Canada is indeed still usable, which is good news for the rotation of the power units introduced by Charles Leclerc so far in view of the second part of the 2024 Formula 1 championship.
