Baku offers Ferrari an opportunity, but the SF-26 must finally put everything together

Charles Leclerc, Ferrari SF-26, 2026 F1

Charles Leclerc heads into the 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix with one of Ferrari’s clearest opportunities to make an impact in qualifying, but Baku will also provide a demanding examination of the SF-26. The Monegasque driver’s exceptional record around the street circuit offers encouragement, yet setup compromises, tyre management, Ferrari’s recent difficulties and a possible power unit penalty mean the weekend is far from straightforward.

This Saturday will bring the ninth edition of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, with a weekend expected to be considerably more dynamic than Formula 1’s recent visit to Madrid. Baku’s combination of very long straights, a technical Old Town section and little margin for error can expose both the strengths of the drivers and the characteristics of their cars. The unusual Thursday-to-Saturday programme is detailed in the 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix schedule.

Calling Baku a technical challenge is therefore no exaggeration. Ferrari has once again come under scrutiny after a sequence of difficult races. Until the summer, the Scuderia had been able to fight more effectively at the front and at least partially interrupt Mercedes’ dominance, whereas recently it has increasingly found itself in the role of pursuer.

And Mercedes is no longer Ferrari’s only concern. McLaren’s recent upgrades appear to have strengthened areas that had previously represented some of the SF-26’s advantages, including its chassis performance. Ferrari therefore arrives in Azerbaijan facing an important test, particularly when its most recent weekends are taken into account.

Ferrari at Baku: can Charles Leclerc make the difference?

Baku has historically produced both highs and painful moments for Ferrari in qualifying. The positive side of that record belongs largely to Charles Leclerc, who has taken four pole positions at the venue. At the same time, the Monegasque driver has also hit the barriers on two occasions, including last year.

Even so, Charles Leclerc has developed considerable confidence around the Azerbaijan layout and could potentially deliver Ferrari’s first pole position of the 2026 season. Baku has repeatedly shown how much a driver can influence the final lap time when confidence is high through the narrow and technical middle sector.

Qualifying performance alone, however, will not solve Ferrari’s problems. During the Spanish Grand Prix weekend, Fred Vasseur spoke about a team that had struggled to put every element together when it mattered in qualifying. In Azerbaijan, qualifying takes place on Friday rather than Saturday, but the underlying challenge remains the same.

That inability to combine all the necessary elements has prevented both Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton from consistently occupying the front rows. Ferrari’s wider concerns heading into the weekend are also examined in the team’s difficult Baku outlook for the SF-26.

Why Baku forces Ferrari into a difficult SF-26 setup compromise

Choosing the correct setup will be one of Ferrari’s most important tasks. The first and third sectors feature long straight sections where power unit performance and aerodynamic efficiency become particularly important. The central sector is completely different, winding between the narrow streets of Baku’s Old Town and placing greater emphasis on the car’s handling characteristics and the driver’s confidence.

A very low-downforce configuration can provide a significant benefit on the faster sections, but it risks costing lap time through the technical second sector. Increasing the aerodynamic load improves performance through the corners but creates the opposite problem on the first and third sectors. Ferrari therefore has to find a compromise rather than simply targeting maximum straight-line speed.

The long acceleration zones also make energy management particularly significant for the SF-26, adding another layer to the challenge already facing Ferrari. The specific demands can be explored further in the analysis of Ferrari’s Baku energy and straight-line test.

Ferrari tyre management comes under scrutiny in Azerbaijan

Tyre management will be another major area to watch. Pirelli has selected the C3, C4 and C5 compounds, the softest trio in its 2026 range. Grip levels are also expected to be an important factor, while sections around the opening corners have been resurfaced. Track evolution from Thursday’s opening practice sessions through to Saturday’s race could therefore have a significant influence on performance.

There is also the risk of greater tyre wear as drivers push for maximum performance, making graining another important consideration. Ferrari experienced difficulties with tyre temperature at the Madrid Grand Prix, where the circuit also featured new asphalt. Charles Leclerc acknowledged problems getting the red-walled tyres into their correct operating window on Friday, with similar difficulties emerging again over the final ten laps of the race. The broader performance picture from that weekend can be revisited in the Spanish Grand Prix technical analysis.

The preferred objective in Baku will be to complete the race with a single pit stop. Achieving that will require Ferrari to understand the behaviour of all three compounds and find a way to sustain long stints without sacrificing too much performance. Once the weekend begins, compound usage and stint lengths can also be followed through the F1 Tyre & Stint Analysis.

Could Baku really suit the Ferrari SF-26?

The bigger question is whether the Azerbaijan Grand Prix can genuinely favour Ferrari. Looking back at previous races, Spa offers one possible comparison because of its combination of high-speed sections and a more technical middle sector. There, Ferrari was able to remain among the closest challengers to Kimi Antonelli’s Mercedes.

The situation has changed, however, because rival teams have introduced upgrades that currently appear to be working more effectively than Ferrari’s recent developments. As a result, there remains a risk that the Scuderia could find itself behind McLaren and Red Bull as well as Mercedes.

Charles Leclerc’s weekend could also begin with an additional complication. If Ferrari’s plans involving the ADUO 2 power unit lead to a grid penalty, the Monegasque driver could be forced to start from the back. Such a scenario could create an opportunity for Ferrari to use team tactics in qualifying, with Charles Leclerc potentially providing a slipstream for Lewis Hamilton.

Azerbaijan GP offers opportunities beyond outright Ferrari pace

Unlike Madrid, Baku places considerable importance on both qualifying and the race itself. The street circuit can produce a more dynamic Grand Prix, and Ferrari will have to remain alert to opportunities created by the track rather than focusing exclusively on its underlying performance level.

The probability of mistakes is significant because of the walls, narrow sections and heavy braking zones, which also increases the possibility of a Safety Car. Ferrari’s objective will be to exploit whatever opportunities the race provides without building its strategy entirely around unpredictable incidents.

The 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix can therefore represent a genuine opportunity for Charles Leclerc and Ferrari, but it is certainly not a guarantee of success. Charles Leclerc’s confidence around Baku and some of the SF-26’s characteristics could work in the Scuderia’s favour, while the weaknesses exposed over recent races still need to be reassessed on this very different circuit.

More than simply discovering whether Ferrari can be competitive, Baku should reveal whether the team can finally combine qualifying execution, setup choice, tyre management and race strategy across an entire weekend. That ability to put every element together may ultimately matter more than the SF-26’s theoretical potential alone.
