Formula 1 teams can finally breathe a little easier in April, following the cancellation of the two Middle Eastern races due to the ongoing conflict. Engineers now have more time to refine their cars and unlock performance, so much so that Frédéric Vasseur admitted, “from Miami, there will be a new championship.” While Mercedes can approach the upcoming races with relative calm, Ferrari and McLaren are expected to push at full throttle to close the gap; however, the real revolution is anticipated in June, when the new engine test bench will come into play.
According to journalist and F1 expert David Croft, the Woking-based team is considering the most aggressive approach, while Maranello has encountered renewed difficulties. Croft explained on the Sky Sports podcast: “McLaren will bring a big upgrade package to Miami, and they are already happy with the results coming from the simulator. I believe that Oscar Piastri could have won in Suzuka without the Safety Car. Kimi had an excellent pace, but he still had to make overtakes, while Oscar had clean air ahead and was in front.”
He added, “Some people in the paddock have told me that Ferrari will be limited in their development by the rear of the car, whereas Mercedes will only need to optimize the details of their package.”
With McLaren pushing aggressively and Ferrari grappling with technical constraints, the Miami Grand Prix is shaping up to be a key weekend that could set the tone for the mid-season championship battle. Teams are focused not only on updates to their chassis and aerodynamics but also on strategic refinements to maximize energy deployment and tire management as the 2026 Formula 1 season intensifies.
