Let’s take a look at the average gap to pole position in the first five races of the 2023 Formula 1 championship:

Average gap to pole in 2023:
As expected Red Bull are the benchmark in this start of the season. Scuderia Ferrari are on average three tenths slower than Red Bull on a qualifying lap but in the race that gap widens to seven tenths.
Aston Martin and Mercedes are slightly further behind followed by Alpine who are slightly ahead of the midfield group. So far this year the Alphatauri has been the slowest car across one lap.
The gap between Mercedes and Alpine truly show that the 8 first spots are filled in the race
That Ferrari gap is very odd. Aston Martin and Mercedes have the same gap in race as in qualifying but for some reason Ferrari goes backwards in race. Frederic Vasseur is right they need to properly understand why that is happening as the phenomenon is very odd considering.
