Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz make up one of the youngest driver pairs in Ferrari history – with the two just twenty-three and twenty-six, respectively. A policy this is clearly in contrast with what has ever been seen in Maranello (not only for their age, but also for their relative experience in Formula 1). In an interview with Channel 4, the Monegasque driver spoke about his relationship with the Spaniard and the work that awaits them in view of 2022.
A bond between Charles and Carlos who is not yet affected by the rivalry on the track. Up to now, the two have not had the opportunity to really clash in the first races of the 2021 Formula 1 season. In addition to the fact that there have not been any real reasons for conflict, and presumably there will be none. However, one cannot fail to notice that Charles Leclerc has been the protagonist of some incidents (definitely unnecessary) in the past. Like the one with the four-time German world champion at Interlagos in 2019. Proof of the fact that behind the misunderstandings there is not always and only the fight for the world championship.
A world championship which is a declared goal of both (how could it not ?!). But for that reason the Monegasque recognized that: “In Formula 1 everything takes time, and looking at the gap on the track [ed. with Mercedes and Red Bull] it is clear that we are still a long way off. There is still a lot of work to be done. However, 2022, with the new regulations, represents a great possibility; for this it will be essential for us to start in the best way.”
“[Ed. Today] there is a substantial gap between the top and the midfield, but then behind the cars they are all very close. It is hoped that from next year – with simpler rules and less freedom in development – the cars can be more grouped. The fans want it, but we as drivers want it too. We want to be able to make a difference with our driving, which is currently not possible” – Charles Leclerc added.
The two drivers thus push for a winning Ferrari, capable of allowing them to fight for the championship in 2022. They have stated this themselves several times. So the focus is now on 2022.
