Former F1 driver & World Endurance Champion Anthony Davidson, currently Sky Sports F1 analyst, was asked to choose his top five Formula 1 drivers, with both Scuderia Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz making the cut.
The current crop of Formula 1 drivers is seen as one of the best that Formula 1 has ever had. We could see how in the 2021 season, Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen pushed each other to a whole new level as they were involved in a close battle for the world title. At the same time, behind them in the chasing midfield pack, several other drivers stood out with great performances.
McLaren’s Lando Norris enjoyed his strongest Formula 1 season to date and led the British team’s fight with Scuderia Ferrari for P3 behind Mercedes and Red Bull, failing to score points only twice across 22 events, which included four podium finishes.
He was also able to score his first career pole, at the Sochi Autodrom in the Russian Grand Prix.

Alpine’s Esteban Ocon became a race winner for the first time at a crazy Hungarian Grand Prix, while Pierre Gasly took an incredible win at the Monza circuit in the 2020 Italian Grand Prix and was considered a standout of the 2021 midfield with his consistent performances for AlphaTauri, breaking the 100-point barrier in a campaign for the first time.
George Russell also enjoyed a good season with Williams, twice qualifying in the top three, with his P2 on the grid in Belgium becoming a first career podium, as a result of the heavy rain which meant that drivers could only complete a few laps behind the Safety Car. P3 on the grid in Russia was his other ‘Mr Saturday’ special display.
Scuderia Ferrari won the fight for the ‘best of the rest’ status, taking third place in the 2021 Constructors’ standings, in a season where Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc proved they were arguably the strongest driver line-up on the grid.
It was no surprise then to see both drivers of the Maranello team made Anthony Davidson’s top five Formula 1 drivers, while Verstappen and Hamilton also made the list as expected.
“It’s always difficult to judge because the material you ride with has a huge influence in this sport,” Anthony Davidson said, as reported by Motorsport.com – “But if you’re talking about the top five drivers, then Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton are of course among them, and Charles Leclerc is also one of the best. If you then mention Carlos Sainz, you already have four. And then there’s Lando Norris. Then I’m already at five.” – he explained.
