The 2022 Formula 1 calendar is still neither official nor provisional. According to German automobile magazine Auto Motor und Sport, the teams put it together from the first indications, but it should be pretty close to the program that Formula 1 is planning for its restart season in 2022. Accordingly, the calendar should include 23 races that will be held within just 245 days. That is 14 days less than in 2021.
The 2022 championship starts like this year in Bahrain, but a week earlier. The start is scheduled for March 20th. Before that, there will be three testing days from February 23rd to 25th in Barcelona and from March 11th to 13th in Bahrain. This means that there are only five days between the end of the winter test drives and the first training on the Sakhir circuit.
The 73rd Formula 1 season in history ends again in Abu Dhabi. However, unusually early. After the curtain falls in December this year, it should be November 20th in 2022.
The Formula 1 management wants to give the teams a longer break in winter because they know how stressful it is to hold 23 Grands Prix in such a compact period of time. It currently contains three triple headers, two in Europe and one overseas.
Imola ahead of China
After the start with the Bahrain Grand Prix, the premier class remains in the region and the GP Saudi Arabia will be up next. The Australian GP will then follow with a two-week break, as the Melbourne event had to be canceled two times in a row.
Formula 1 bosses are optimistic that Australia will ease its travel restrictions later this year. The vaccination program is now proceeding rapidly. 52 percent of all people over the age of 16 have already been vaccinated twice. With a vaccination rate of 80 percent, the strict quarantine regulations are to be relaxed.
China was originally planned as the fourth Grand Prix, but the signs are more towards isolation. Imola would like to step in on April 24th. From there it goes to a new location in the USA. Miami has already officially confirmed its date on May 8th, as the United States plans to lift its travel restrictions as early as November 1st.
After the race in Miami, the European season begins almost traditionally: Spain on May 22nd, Monaco a week later. At the classic in Monte Carlo, training will no longer take place on Thursday, but rather normally on Friday. This should reduce the stress for the Formula 1 entourage.
The Azerbaijan GP retains its traditional place in June. A week later, the circus finally wants to hit Montreal again. Here too, the Grand Prix had to be canceled twice in a row due to the pandemic.
Two triple headers in a row
There should be four races in July. It starts with Silverstone on July 3rd, followed by Austria on July 10th and France on July 17th. The race at Paul Ricard has not yet been confirmed. Imola was originally planned as a replacement date, but Emilia Romagna must probably already be ready for China. As usual, the last race before the summer break will take place in Budapest at the end of July.
After a four-week break, the season will continue according to the pattern of 2021 from August 28 with the triple header Belgium, the Netherlands and Italy. This is followed by the next triple header: Russia, Singapore and Japan are scheduled to join forces between September 25th and October 9th. There is still a question mark hovering over Singapore. A substitute here would be the Turkish Grand Prix.
On October 23, the second time is in the USA. Austin and Mexico then form a double-header again. The season ends with Brazil on November 13th and Abu Dhabi just a week later. There are 14 hours of flight between the two destinations, but Formula 1 proved in the 2010 season that it is possible.
Germany is not coming back on the Formula 1 map for the time being. The talks with the F1 management were unfortunately unsuccessful. Most recently, attempts have even been made to bring a Grand Prix back to Germany with the help of sponsors. but all efforts failed in the end because of the financial viability.
