There is an unwritten but always adhered-to rule that the next automobile will just be an evolution of the one that is clearly dominant.
Unquestionably, the Red Bull RB18 represented the strongest application of the 2022 F1 technical standards, but it was also the car least impacted by the season’s “rules amendments” (the implementation of Technical Directive No 39, which was enforced from the Belgian GP).
Porpoising, or aerodynamic jolts, which had returned to F1 vehicles this season as a relic of the ground-effect single-seaters, was clearly well controlled by this car. The car was able to control the effects that caused the jolts because to its aerodynamic properties, which included the floor design for the RB18 as well as the geometry and apparent simplicity of the front suspension. This effectively eliminated any bouncing frequently observed on Ferrari or Mercedes vehicles.
To make the idea more understandable, the effects of the (illegal) use of active suspensions were nearly mechanically replicated in accordance with the present technological legislation.
The Honda RA622H engine unit and the RB18’s performance were built on the seamless fusion of vehicle dynamics and aerodynamic performance. The car’s gradual weight loss, as it was over the 798kg limit at the beginning of the season, was the key reason that firmly connected these two components.
The design team, directed by Pierre Wache and directly under Adrian Newey’s direction, saw right away that one of the elements that may produce performance was the carefully managed rigidity for the centre of the bottom. While it was crucial that the lateral peripheral sections be intact, deformation was not allowed. Due to the very low ride heights, the floor was prevented from creating an aerodynamic block, and the structure of the air flow beneath the automobile was also kept intact, which would have exacerbated porpoising.
The crew has prioritised weight loss and the gradual updating of the floor for the duration of 2022. It is helpful to know that there were at least sixteen different variants of the floor constructed, obviously none of which could be distinguished by obvious details.
The technical office was able to lay the groundwork for the RB19 while maintaining the same priorities that had characterised the development of the RB18 thanks to the information gathered throughout the season, even in the case of modestly positive feedback, like that of the debut of the floor introduced at Silverstone.
All about the RB19
Next year’s challenger has adhered to two principles that will characterise its fundamental reinvention while also preserving a strong “family feeling” with the prior car. The project’s first goals were based on reducing weight, already beginning with the concepts of the lightweight chassis that had been widely debated during the summer but never really adopted. While Red Bull Racing has always been popular among sports fanatics, sports betting is also increasingly on the rise as well especially at new betting sites like Picklebet revealing odds for the Constructors Championship 2023 – Season H2H – Red Bull Racing vs. Mercedes AMG Motorsport with Red Bull Racing at 1.65 and Mercedes at 2.11.
The monocoque of the RB19 will be distinguished by a weight savings of around three kilos as compared to its forerunner. The floor will also be lighter than the previous one thanks to the new regulation, which raises the “elbow” (the section connecting with the venturi channels) by 10 mm and the side profile in front of the rear wheels by 15 mm. This prevents deformation in the peripheral portions and maintains a high degree of stiffness in relation to the shape of the sides.
The lower narrowing, which increases the section of the lower Venturi channels, should be present in the gearbox case and where the suspension components are placed.
In terms of upper aerodynamics, while preserving strong points of contact with the 2022 model, the basic layout of the sidepods will be distinguished by a refinement of the cut-outs under the sidepods, which produce a “double floor” impression. At the base of the sidepods, there will be an extension of similar cut-outs toward the back.
Although the RB19’s design shouldn’t surprise anyone, they will undergo a fairly significant evolution from the RB18 in terms of production methods and vehicle dynamics.
