Hamilton-Ferrari: a marriage that is not taking off
The first season of Lewis Hamilton at the wheel of Ferrari has so far fallen below expectations for the seven-time Formula 1 world champion, who has yet to step onto the podium as a driver of the Scuderia. A series of disappointing results had already pushed him, even before the summer break, to describe himself as “useless”, sparking debates and controversy around those statements. To make matters worse, on his return to the track at Zandvoort, the British driver was involved in a mistake that forced him to retire early from the race. In addition, he was handed a five-place grid penalty for Monza for failing to respect double yellow flag conditions.
First signs of recovery
However, precisely in Ferrari’s home Grand Prix, car number 44 appeared more at ease with the SF-25. Starting from tenth position, the former Mercedes driver climbed up to sixth place, during a weekend in which Lewis Hamilton was embraced by the warmth and support of the Tifosi. Despite this, doubts continue to surround the form of the 40-year-old, who has been the subject of criticism from former drivers and figures connected to the Formula 1 world.
Among the great champions of the past, though, there is one who has defended Hamilton: Alain Prost. The four-time world champion, who also raced for Ferrari during the 1990–1991 seasons (sharing the garage in his final year with Jean Alesi), does not believe that the British driver has lost his touch. Prost defended him while also recognizing the particular difficulties that come with wearing Ferrari red. He explained in an article for L’Équipe that when you win with Ferrari it is better than with any other team, but when success does not come, it is worse than with any other team.
According to Alain Prost, everyone talks and writes about it, but the reality is very different. He stated firmly that he does not believe in any way that the talent of Lewis Hamilton has diminished or, even worse, disappeared.
